DOES BASARA NEED GLASSES? I saw someone question whether Basara's glasses are prescription glasses, or if they are light blue sunglasses that he only wears for aesthetic. Seeing one person question this was pretty much enough to prompt me to think way too much into it, so here's my explanation on why Basara's glasses are indeed prescription glasses.
First thing to get out of the way; the colour. Basara's glasses are sometimes blue, while other times they appear more transparent. I think that the blue tint is largely due to the design aspect of the character, as having the lenses be of a drastically different colour than skin appears much clearer and less cluttered, especially with the round shape of his frame. Being the main character, he needed a coherent, aesthetically pleasing appearance and giving him regularly shaped glasses would be boring. There's also the option of him having photochromic lenses; type of lenses that darken when exposed to bright light. Since they were invented in 60s it could be feasible of them to appear in Macross 7, which was made in the 90s, but it's highly unlikely for that to actually be the case. Just figured I could mention it as a possibility, no matter how tiny. The reason people question whether he wears prescription glasses is due to his Macross 7 Plus short, in which he seems to find the glasses on the ground. However, I believe that the entire Totsugeki Acoustic Love Heart short is symbolic, and the theory on that can be found here. Lastly, here are the reasons why I think that there's no way his glasses are anything other than prescription glasses;
And thus I conclude my case on why Basara definitely needs his glasses to see. Basara's eyesight is probably bad enough for him to need glasses, but good enough for him to still be able to see decently without them, which is why there are a few occasions in which he doesn't wear them. I need glasses to see, but I can still get by without them for a decently long time before my eyes get too tired and strained due to over-focusing, which is when I need to put my glasses on again. Basara is most likely similar, which is why he can go into battle a few times without glasses and still get out of it unharmed. |
