BASARA DID NOT UTILIZE THE POWER OF ANIMA SPIRITIA
This theory might sound as a bit out there at the first glance, but it turns out that there's quite a lot of evidence, which points to the direction of Basara not actually using the power that anima spiritia is supposed to possess.
The powers of anima spiritia that were established in the show are the following;
Power #1 is passive, so Basara would be using it without really "using" it. This is something he couldn't help either way, but it's what enabled him to go on after everyone else would've been out of the game. Power #2 however, has never been knowingly used by him, he has never attempted to use it, nor has he ever even KNOWN about it. Basara was not there when the rest of the characters learned about it. When everyone else was trying to be given a solution by people long gone, Basara was out seeing the galaxy and finding a new solution within himself. |
Notice the lack of something in that anima spirita description? Yeah. Music.
By all given accounts, anima spiritia doesn't seem to have anything to do with music. The protodeviln didn't seem familiar with it at all when, if the previous anima spiritia used music as well, they should know to be wary of it, but instead they were mostly surprised and curious. It's also worth noting that, while it's fairly safe to assume that being the anima spiritia is what gave Basara his spiritia longevity and attracted the Protodeviln to him, there's also the possibility that he just boosts his own soul all the time so much that he appeared to be something he was not - though the only clue to back this up would be the moment in the series when Basara's spiritia drops to a more regular level when he stops singing. It's no mystery that Basara's music raises spiritia - specifically his singing, as there are several occasions in which Sivil does not react to a song until Basara starts singing. It does so to humans and Protodeviln. The reason the Protodeviln run away and feel what they feel appears to be due to some kind of a spiritia overload. They are faced with such an instant amount of such pure spiritia that they can't handle it and, as seen in Sivil's case, they appear to "explode" as a result and lose all their spiritia in process (which caused Sivil's sleep). |
Basara's music? Him waking up other people from a coma? Him turning the Protodeviln into a species that can supply their own spiritia?
I think none of that had ANYTHING to do with him being the anima spiritia. That was just him, and his own personal energy, determination and unyielding, unbridled passion.
Song energy and anima spiritia are not one and the same. The greatest proof of this is, that Mylene has a weaker form of this power. Her song returned spiritia to Alice Holiday, and her song had the same effect on several Protodeviln as Basara's, when Basara wasn't around. We know for certain that she is NOT an anima spiritia as she is never even remotely referred to as such. Neither is Veffidas, who used the power as well.

What this basically means is, that Macross 7 is a show where the Chosen One doesn't use or even really cares about his Chosen One's Power and instead stubbornly sticks to his tried and true ways until he emerges victorious.
I am pretty sure that Basara has never really been told or explained what anima spirita is and what it's supposed to do, but it's not like he would care about it, and here's why;
Anima spiritia is most likely something that could be considered a lost art. It's very likely that even if Basara knew what it was supposed to do, he wouldn't know how to activate it. But most of all, anima spiritia is a WEAPON. It's a means to defeat the enemy. It's not something Basara would've wanted. He was given the ultimate weapon and was marked as the only one who can use it to take down a powerful opponent, but instead of using it, he found a different, pacifist way to end the war for spiritia between the Protodeviln and all other beings for all eternity. Anima spiritia had nothing to do with that. Basara's ideals and passion had everything to do with that. He took no handouts from fate and took on the issue with his own hard work. He faced the problem head-on and fixed it for good, instead of sealing it away for someone else to deal with it once again in the future. All everyone else had to do was just listen to his song. |
